Using DNA as Proof in Origins Science

Many Christians aren’t familiar with constructing logical arguments, but it is an essential component of defending Scripture. The DVD lecture DNA By Design by Dr. Stephen Meyer is a great example of building a case for Intelligent Design using classical reasoning.

Dr. Meyer’s argument considers 4 hypotheses of human DNA  origin:

  1. Our origin is by chance
  2. Our origin is by necessity (law)
  3. Our origin is by chance and necessity
  4. Our origin is by a transcendent Creator

As technology advances, we are able to observe more details about cells, DNA and its components, most of which were unknown to Darwin or even Stanley Miller in his famous “chemical evolution thesis” of 1953.  Dr. Meyer uses three functions of proteins to argue there is not enough time for the specified complexity of information to occur by chance and that the adaptive capacity of proteins is pre-programmed rather than necessity.

The origin of life cannot be considered without addressing the origin of information. The Bible reveals that information originated with God and He literally spoke information into His Creation.

During our study, Alberta pointed out, “Those who would debate the origin of life ignore at their peril the Word of God, which reveals the hand of a transcendent Creator who declares “ … we were made in secret in His sight, woven in the depths of the earth” (Ps 139:15); that “He made our inward parts in the womb” (v 13). We are “wonderfully made, we are His works” (v 14) made of chemicals called dust into sentient beings (Gen 2:7), in His image. As believers, He says we are parts of His Body, which “grows with a growth that is from God” (Col 2:19). When one part malfunctions, so goes the whole Body (1 Cor 12:26). He looks for – and is making – a Bride for Himself, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish (Eph 5:25).”
